After gathering the last of his father’s inheritance,
he left Vienna. Hitler was extremely pleased that he was joining the Germany
Army, so he worked hard and considered the war somewhat fun, which gained him
contempt from his comrades. But, after four years of serving the military he
became a corporal and 1918 he was awarded the Iron Cross in 1918, which was Germany’s
highest award. Hitler believed that Germany was going to win the war, but after
he was admitted into the hospital by being partially blind because of mustard
gas, he had missed seeing Germany surrendered. Hitler was angry and humiliated
by this news. During, his recovery he started to think that the Jews were responsible
for the surrender and he quotes, that hatred grew in him for the Jews.
